What "normal vaginal pH" actually means
pH is just a measure of acidity on a 0-to-14 scale, where 7 is neutral, lower numbers are acidic, and higher numbers are alkaline. The vagina of a healthy person of reproductive age is deliberately acidic: the consensus normal range is roughly 3.8 to 4.5. To put that in everyday terms, it is somewhere between tomato juice and black coffee — noticeably tart, and far more acidic than skin or saliva.
That acidity is not an accident or a by-product. It is an active defence. The dominant bacteria in a healthy vaginal microbiome are Lactobacillus species, and the acid they produce makes the environment inhospitable to many of the organisms that cause discomfort, odor and infection. When landmark microbiome surveys such as Ravel and colleagues' 2011 study mapped the vaginal communities of reproductive-age women, the healthiest, most stable communities were those dominated by lactobacilli, and those communities ran acidic.
One thing to fix in your head early: "normal" is age-dependent. Before puberty and after menopause, estrogen is low, lactobacilli are sparse, and a pH in the high 4s or even into the 5s can be entirely ordinary for that stage of life. The 3.8-to-4.5 window is a reproductive-years number.
How lactobacilli keep the environment acidic

Estrogen tells the cells lining the vagina to thicken and to fill with glycogen, a storage sugar. As those cells mature and shed, glycogen becomes available in the vaginal fluid. Lactobacillus species ferment that glycogen (and its breakdown products) into lactic acid. Lactic acid is the primary thing holding vaginal pH down in the 3.8-to-4.5 band. Research by O'Hanlon and colleagues found that at physiological concentrations, lactic acid itself suppressed the bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis — more reliably, in fact, than the hydrogen peroxide that older textbooks emphasised.
So the chain runs: estrogen → glycogen → lactobacilli → lactic acid → low pH → a hostile environment for unwanted microbes. Not every Lactobacillus species does this equally well. L. crispatus-dominant communities tend to be the most acidic and the most stable; communities dominated by L. iners are more changeable. Why a reading above 4.5 points toward BV, not yeast
This is the single most useful thing a pH reading can tell you, and it is counter-intuitive. Most people assume any discomfort means "a yeast infection." But the two most common causes of vaginal symptoms behave very differently on the pH scale.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is what happens when protective lactobacilli decline and a mix of anaerobic bacteria takes over. Fewer lactobacilli means less lactic acid, which means the pH climbs. An elevated pH above 4.5 is one of the classic clinical signs of BV — it is part of the long-established Amsel diagnostic criteria that clinicians use.
Yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis) are caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a fungus. Crucially, Candida is quite happy in an acidic environment, so a classic yeast infection usually leaves the pH in the normal 3.8-to-4.5 range. Intense itching plus thick discharge but a normal pH leans toward yeast; thinner discharge with odor and an elevated pH leans toward BV.

What at-home pH strips actually measure
An at-home vaginal pH test is a small strip of paper treated with pH-sensitive dye. You hold it against the vaginal wall for a few seconds, and it changes color to indicate acidity. Several such kits are cleared by the FDA and sold over the counter. What they measure is genuinely useful: acidity, quickly, at home, with no lab.
What they do not do is diagnose. A strip returns one number. It cannot see bacteria, it cannot see fungus, and it cannot distinguish between the several different things that can raise a pH reading. Two conditions that both elevate pH — BV and trichomoniasis (an STI) — look identical to a strip, yet they are managed completely differently. And because yeast usually keeps pH normal, a "normal" strip result absolutely does not rule out a yeast infection.
Technique and timing also matter more than most packaging admits. A surprising number of everyday things will skew the number:

A strip is a signal, not a verdict. An elevated reading tells you your acidity has drifted and it is worth paying attention — not what caused it. New, severe, recurrent or unusual symptoms, or any symptoms in pregnancy, are a reason to see a clinician who can run a wet mount, a whiff test and, where needed, a swab. No home test replaces that.
The limits of self-testing, stated plainly
Self-testing has a real place: tracking a known tendency, deciding whether a symptom is worth a call, or simply understanding your own body better. But three limits are worth being honest about. First, a single number cannot separate the several conditions that raise pH. Second, it cannot detect the one common condition — yeast — that usually leaves pH normal. Third, human interpretation is unreliable: studies of women self-diagnosing vaginal symptoms find they are wrong a large share of the time, which is exactly why clinicians combine pH with other findings rather than trusting it alone.
How pH changes across the life span
